Perhaps what orthodox Puritanism contributed to capitalism was a sense of economic calling bounded by moral responsibility. No one could save the individual, no priest, not the Church, no sacraments. "This, the complete elimination of salvation through the Church and the sacraments ... was what formed the absolutely decisive difference from Catholicism." (Protestant, p. 105). BOOK X, CH VI, PETER'S AUTHORITY (1st century): "But I should like that one of you, and not Peter, should answer what I have said; for it is not fitting to take words and instruction at his hand, with questions; but when he gives a deliverance on any subject, that should be held without answering again.

Note that at that time, "Peter" was not the proper name of a man as we know it today, but was only then appropriated to Simon Bar-jona by Jesus, and this name was not given to anyone else. When that proved impossible, he continued to spread his...

On an emotional level (where this book really chooses to reside most of the time), I WANT to agree w/ the author. Thus of the two pastors whose parallel lives are the armature of the Gilead trilogy, the one whom, I suspect, she loves the better, John Ames, sees what the 18th-century Calvinist theologian whom she also loves, Jonathan Edwards, saw: the cause of a rainbow, the sun shining full upon drops of rain from heaven for Edwards and drops dispersed by a sprinkler for Ames. This was the logical conclusion of the gradual elimination of magic from the world.

They may disagree about small details, but the basic premise of everything in regards to God and the Gospel will be essentially the same. Lopez demonstrated in great detail the way in which the Middle Ages “created the indispensable material and moral conditions for a thousand years of virtually uninterrupted growth.” In recent decades, the historians Edwin Hunt and James Murray have illustrated just how much the medieval period was characterized by remarkable innovation in methods of business organization. Others tolerate it, but no one I met or read seemed to really understand it.

Biblical proof of this principle is found in Galatians 2:20, where Paul says that Christ "loved me and gave himself for me," not at all implying that Christ did not also give himself for other people. Within Evangelical Protestantism there are often significant differences among Baptists, Calvinists, Christians of the Reform tradition, Fundamentalists, Pentecostals, etc., that cannot be explained in a few words. The term is generally used in preference to “Calvinist.” Referring to the Reformation, it’s theology, and/or those subscribing to it. Again, Pink says, "Now if God had willed their salvation, would He not have vouchsafed them the means of salvation?
